Despite what the majority of the media is telling you, the events that took place this week within the Republican party for the position of Speaker of the House are not bad. This is how a constitutional republic is supposed to function. It's not always pretty, but it is the best form of government. Many are saying that the 4 days it took to decide on a new Speaker is proof of the Republican party falling apart, but that isn't true.
Many of the people that opposed McCarthy in the beginning realized that there were more things they could get out of this vote. In exchange for the vote of members in the Freedom Caucus, Congress will now have the ability to bring to a vote the ability to remove McCarthy from his role as Speaker. It also made it harder for the House to increase spending, raise taxes, and raise the debt limit. Scott Perry, the Freedom Caucus chairman, said the agreement includes “conservative representation” across the House, by adding members of the right flank to key committees.
“It’s critically important that the Rules Committee reflect the body and reflect the will of the people. And that is a part of this framework,” Representative Chip Roy of Texas told reporters Friday. “What we’ve agreed to in framework will need to have accountability. We need to be able to continue to trust that we’re going to be able to execute on what we’ve agreed to in framework.”
After his win, McCarthy released a statement saying "I hope one thing is clear after this week: I will never give up. And I will never give up for you, the American people."
